Photo: Tanya Tagaq takes top honours at 2014 Polaris gala

Cambridge Bay-raised singer and throat singer Tanya Tagaq beat out musicians like Arcade Fire, Drake and Timber Timbre Sept. 22 to take the 2014 Polaris Music Prize for her album Animism. The Polaris prize, handed out in Toronto, honours creativity and diversity in Canadian music, regardless of album sales. Tagaq, pictured on stage receiving her award with her daughter Naia, encouraged the crowd to “wear and eat seal as much as possible.” Polaris winners receive $30,000.
