Ryan Barry, the Nunavut Impact Review Board’s executive director, is leading talks between representatives from many federal and territorial agencies and reps from the Baffinland Iron Mines Corp., during a project certificate workshop in Iqaluit Dec. 18 and 19, for the proposed Mary River iron mine, railway and transportation system. The workshop comes after Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister John Duncan approved the NIRB’s final hearing report this past Dec. 3. NIRB will use the workshop to clarify how the report’s 182 terms and conditions, aimed at reducing any environmental or socio-economic harm that could flow from the mine project, will be implemented, and who will perform which tasks. The workshop is taking place at the Frobisher Inn’s Koojesse Room in Iqaluit’s Astro Hill complex. It’s open to the public and will likely run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, with lunch breaks from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. (PHOTO BY SAMANTHA DAWSON)
