Nunavut RCMP to charge 16-year-old boy with murder of young woman

Nunavut RCMP have charged a 16-year-old boy with first degree murder, break-and-enter with intent to commit murder and breach of an undertaking in connection with the violent death on Nov. 29 of a young Igloolik mother, police said Nov. 30.

He will be charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, police said. That means his name may not be published or broadcast.

His first court appearance is set for Dec. 4 at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit.

Investigators with the major crimes and the forensic identification sections of Nunavut’s “V” Division of the RCMP were in Igloolik Nov. 30 to investigate the woman’s homicide after members of the Igloolik RCMP detachment responded to a call reporting a disturbance and found the woman dead in her residence.

Sources in the community told Nunatsiaq News that an Igloolik woman in her late 20s died from stab wounds.

After the woman’s partner had gone caribou hunting, someone entered the residence and stabbed the woman in front of her children, sources said.

On Dec. 3 police identified the woman as Tracey Uttak, 26.
