Video footage leads Nunavut cops to teen break-in suspect

Police in Rankin Inlet say they’ve made some headway in tracking down who is responsible for a recent wave of property crimes in this community of about 3,000 people.

Six break-ins at businesses and residences have been reported to the Rankin Inlet RCMP over the last few weeks, the RCMP said in an Aug. 5 news release.

After reviewing video surveillance footage, investigators were able to make a positive identification in two of the six break-ins, the RCMP said

As a result, members of Rankin Inlet RCMP arrested Glen Kadluk Jr., 18. Kadluk is charged with two counts of break-and-enter, one count of possession of break-in tools, and two counts of breaching a probation order.

The charges have yet to be proven in court. Kadluk, who was remanded into custody, will appear Aug. 8 in territorial court in Rankin Inlet.

Meanwhile, police in Rankin Inlet have advised businesses to install security systems: These have played key roles in either preventing break-ins or solving those crimes, the RCMP said.

The RCMP is also urging people to report any suspicious activity or any information to any criminal activity in their communities to the local RCMP detachment or the police Crime Stoppers line at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
