For the record: poverty reduction in Nunavut

Excerpts from Oct. 18 press conference in Iqaluit

Economic Development Minister Peter Taptuna and QIA President Okalik Eegeesiak at a press conference in Iqaluit held Oct. 18

In this clip, QIA President Okalik Eegeesiak points out that although many Inuit beneficiaries may shy away from use of the word “poverty,” they talk frequently about issues related to food, money and the cost of living.

To create a Nunavut poverty strategy, the GN and NTI came up with a new way of working together, which they call “engagement.” Peter Taptuna (off camera) and Okalik Eegeesiak try to explain what it means.

Okalik Eegeesiak says reducing poverty in Nunavut will require the co-operation of many players, including the federal government.
