Iqaluit man faces murder charge in death of Pond Inlet woman

Woman, 57, suffered assault while on medical trip

Jimmy Nowdlak, 27, of Iqaluit faces a charge of first degree murder in connection with the death of a Pond Inlet women who was assaulted Iqaluit during a medical appointments trip in 2008, police said March 2.

The 57-year-old woman died Aug. 29, 2010 in Ottawa as a result of injuries she sustained during an assault alleged to have occurred Sept. 8, 2008 in Iqaluit, an RCMP press release said.

After the assault, she was transported to Ottawa for medical treatment. She remained under medical care until her death this past August.

In January 2009, an investigation resulted in Nowdlak facing a charge of aggravated sexual assault against a certain woman. In October 2010, Nowdlak was scheduled to be tried on that charge, but the matter was put over.

Following an investigation conducted after the 57-year-old woman’s death, the RCMP, after consulting Crown prosecutors, laid the first degree murder charge on March 1, 2011.

Nowdlak is scheduled to appear in court March 7.
