Iqaluit resident with criminal record deported to Florida

U.S. man, 25, worked without a permit

The Canadian Border Services Agency has deported a United States citizen from Florida who worked illegally in Iqaluit until his arrest this past Oct. 2 on an assault with a weapon charge.

Ryan Tartaglia, 25, has been convicted in the United States for offences such as aggravated harassment, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and assault with intent to commit bodily harm.

Chris Kealey, a spokesperson for the border service agency, said Tartaglia likely entered Canada illegally and ended up working without a permit in Iqaluit.

Kealey said authorities do not know when or how the Florida man first entered the country, and that Canadian authorities did not know of his presence in Canada until Oct. 2, when RCMP in Iqaluit laid an assault charge against him.

The border service agency said Tartaglia was “removed from Canada” on Oct. 20.
