By election puts longtime former mayor back in office

He was gone for a year but now he’s back— Johnny A. Oovaut has been re-elected as mayor of Quaqtaq.
In a Dec. 8 by election, Oovaut beat out contenders Tuniq Ningiuruvik and Rhoda Ezekiel to secure the community’s top job again
Returning officer Jamie Okpik called it a small turnout, although more than 50 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot.
Just over 100 residents voted Dec. 8: 11 for Ezekiel, 37 for Ningiuruvik and 53 for Oovaut, Okpik said.
Quaqtaq’s former mayor Bobby Putulik, who was elected in Nov. 2009, recently stepped down for personal reasons.
