The Baffin Island caribou harvest for the 2022-2023 season has ended in Pond Inlet and no more harvesting will be allowed, the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Environment announced Friday.

The harvest was ended because the community reached its allocation of 46 caribou from the total allowable harvest.

Any further harvesting of Baffin Island caribou in Pond Inlet during the 2022-23 season is a violation of the Nunavut Wildlife Act, the department stated in a news release, and any reported violations will be investigated.

The total allowable harvest was established by the Nunavut Wildlife Board to help the recovery of the Baffin Island caribou population. The harvest count is part of the effort to allow the herd to recover for future generations to be able to harvest.

The 2022-23 harvest year ends June 30, a GN spokesperson said Friday afternoon.

I should be allowed to hunt all year, traditionally, with a 308 from the back of a Skidoo.

Has anyone ever been charged for poaching in nunavut or is the GN amd their so called environmental officers just there for show?

Problem is no one is willing to give a witness statement to officers when someone they know did something illegal. Officers cannot be in all places at all times. This applies to all laws being broken not just wildlife laws.
