COVID-19 response ‘nothing short of incredible,’ premier says as Arviat reports 4 new cases

‘Now is not the time to make assumptions or hurtful comments about COVID-19 in Arviat,’ Savikataaq says

Arviat has four new cases of COVID-19, the Government of Nunavut announced Friday.

With one new recovery, that leaves the territory with 17 active cases, all in Arviat.

Premier Joe Savikataaq urged Nunavummiut to be supportive of Arviat residents who remain under lockdown.

“Now is not the time to make assumptions or hurtful comments about COVID-19 in Arviat,” he said in a news release.

“More than ever, we need to practise compassion, support and fostering positivity. The work the community has done over the last 112 days has been nothing short of incredible.”

Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut’s chief public health officer, urged Nunavut residents to become vaccinated “as soon as possible.”

“Despite the new cases, I want to assure all Nunavummiut that this outbreak remains contained, and the Moderna vaccine is proving effective,” he said.

To date, 8,767 Nunavummiut have received at least one dose of the Moderna vaccine, and 5,144 Nunavummiut are fully vaccinated.

Vaccine clinics in the territory are ongoing. Nunavummiut who are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine can call their health centre for an appointment.

The government encourages people who believe they have been exposed to COVID-19 to call the COVID-hotline at 1-888-975-8601 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST, or to notify their community health centre right away, and immediately isolate at home for 14 days. People who may have been exposed to the virus should not go to the health centre in person, the GN says.

You’ve got this Arviat! Prayers to you all. Stay safe and look out for each other. There are a lot of people thinking of you, praying for you, and checking everyday to see how you’re doing.

“Now is not the time to make assumptions or hurtful comments about COVID-19 in Arviat,”
We are not making assumptions… We see the pictures that Arviat posts of them breaking the rules, we see the Facebook sell swap posts that are still going on, and we hear the first hand stories from our relatives…
Restrictions – NOT working, GN and Health warnings – NOT working, State of emergency – NOT working, Shamming – NOT working.
MR. Main is right, bring in the military, the rest of the Kivalliq is still in a restricted mode BECAUSE of Arviat. I have a niece playing in a hockey tournament this weekend and I can’t go watch BECAUSE of Arviat.

to “u r the real disappointment”. There is no mention that I’m MAD ABOUT HOCKEY anywhere in my post, I’m just pointing out a fact that we can’t attend because we are in lockdown BECAUSE of Arviat. (it is what it is).
My knowledge comes from actual pictures of multiple trucks and Hondas outside houses that don’t usually have them. PICTURES of 15 kids playing hockey on the road. Pictures from inside the store when it’s crowded. This is not ignorance or 3rd, 4th, 5th hand this is actual photographic evidence of rule breaking.

At least kids in your community can play hockey and other sports. Arviat kids have not been able to play organized sports for the last 120 days. Blame and shame only shows what kind of people you are. Covid does not discriminate, why should we discriminate against our fellow Inuit? It is a ruthless virus and destroys everything in its path. So many of us will have to learn to live with each other again, we will have to live through PTSD because the continued lockdown has stripped us of everything. We are yet to meet babies born since October. We were not able to hold a new born, we were not able to celebrate Christmas and New Year with our family and friends outside of our household. At least you can leave your house and enjoy a cup of coffee with your friends. At least you can enjoy a meal with family outside of your household. At least you are in a more manageable mental state. I pray none of you will have to go through what we are going through. We lost friends from other communities because of shaming and blaming. We are doing our best with what we have. We need better housing, better mental health services and so much more. Instead of complaining, be grateful with what you have. Be thankful your community is not hit with covid.

Arviat has problems that they don’t seem to be able to fix. Trouble is, they’re making life a little more difficult for others in Nunavut. If not for Arviat we would still have a “travel bubble” with NWT.

I’m so glad to see Nunatsiaq removed the comment about prayer not working. Let’s all thank Nuntsiaq for being consistent in prioritizing non-sense and fantasy above reality. Keep in fake Nunatsiaq, it’s what we expect.
