Former Nunavut MP Leona Aglukkaq appointed to Agnico Eagle board

‘Her skills and experience will be extremely valuable,’ says chair of Agnico Eagle’s board

Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. now has Inuit representation on its board of directors with the recent appointment of former Nunavut MP Leona Aglukkaq, the company announced Friday morning.

Effective March 11, Aglukkaq is one of 10 directors at Agnico Eagle, which now operates three gold mines in the territory — Meadowbank and Meliadine and more recently, Hope Bay.

Aglukkaq had served on the board of another mining company, TMAC Resources Inc., until Agnico Eagle acquired the company, which owns the Hope Bay property, in February.

“We are pleased to welcome Leona to the board, and we are looking forward to working with her,” said James D. Nasso, chair of the board, in a Friday news release.

“Her skills and experience will be extremely valuable as we continue to build our business in Nunavut.”

Aglukkaq was first elected as Nunavut MP in 2008 and went on to serve a second term in 2011.

During that period, she served as a minister of health, environment, minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and minister responsible for the Arctic Council.

She previously served as a territorial cabinet minister.

A win for everyone. I was hoping to see her back on the hill in conservative blue but she’ll do great in agnico gold.

Proving once again that it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

Maybe the lower staff will go through the garbage cans for food like her constituents did while she was in parliament.
