Kiviaq doc airs next month
History Television, a popular cable channel available to most Nunavut cable subscribers, will broadcast Zacharias Kunuk’s documentary Kiviaq versus Canada on March 5 at 9 p.m. eastern time.
The documentary tells the colourful story of Kiviaq, Canada’s first Inuk lawyer, who was taken away from his Kivalliq home as a child and raised in Edmonton, Alberta.
Under his former name, David Ward, Kiviaq became a Golden Gloves boxing champion, male model, open line radio host and Edmonton city alderman. After an unsuccessful bid for the Edmonton mayor’s job, Kiviaq went back to university and became a lawyer.
Now he’s suing the federal government to win for Inuit the same rights and benefits for that the federal government offers First Nations people.
