When Mckenzie Demerah walked into her first Grizzlies futsal practice, she felt cozy and welcome.

That was six years ago.

Now the Kugluktuk high school junior and her teammates are aiming for the futsal—or indoor soccer—territorial championships in Iqaluit next month.

In order to get there, however, they need to raise $8,000.

To get the ball rolling, head coach Brittany Rosborough quickly put together a GoFundMe page to share with her friends and family back home in New Brunswick.

Since then, word has spread and the fundraiser has accumulated just over $1,500 with donations coming in from friends, family, community members and others.

With just over a month and a half to go before the Nov. 14 championships, Rosborough, Demerah and the team know they have their work cut out for them.

In addition to the GoFundMe campaign, the team is hosting what they’re calling late-nighters—big get-togethers where youth from Kugluktuk can pay a small admission fee and enjoy a night of music and games. They’re also kicking around a number of other fundraising ideas, including pancake breakfasts.

When asked what going to the championships would mean to her, Demerah responded, “The world.”

The trip to Iqaluit is more than just a chance for the Grizzlies to face off against other teams from throughout the territory—the tournament is also a qualifier for the Arctic Winter Games.

“There are quite a few girls on our team who have the potential to go on and play [for the Nunavut team],” said Rosborough.

In addition to travel expenses, the funds raised will also go towards new equipment, including socks, shin pads, balls and shorts.

You just had to say that, didn’t you? Seriously, another good youth project to pitch.
