The opening of the new Anuri nickel mine at the Raglan Mine property this week means its owner, Glencore Group, will continue working in Nunavik for at least another 20 years, the company announced Monday.

Planning and preparation work has been underway for the Anuri mine more than 10 years. It will be officially opened Tuesday with a ceremony involving company officials and dignitaries.

The company didn’t say when mining work will begin there.

Raglan Mine, located between between Kangiqsujuaq and Salluit, is Nunavik’s largest private-sector employer with more than 1,400 employees, according to the company’s website.

Anuri — which Glencore called one of the largest mining investments in Quebec in the past 10 years — is part of the Sivumut Project, a three-phase endeavour the company put forward more than 25 years ago to chart its future operations.

The first phase was the opening of the Raglan Mine in 1997. The second phase included expanding the existing Qakimajurk mine, and the third phase is opening the Anuri mine.

According to Monday’s release, the Anuri mine opening comes ahead of schedule, despite challenges along the way posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the harsh Arctic climate.

More than 60 Raglan employees took part in deliberations to name the new mine.

Anuri means “wind” in Inuktitut, and “it embodies the change, vigor and evolution that this new phase represents for our company,” according to the release.

The Sivumut Project involved consultation and participation with Inuit communities through the environmental and social impact assessment process, and is in compliance with Quebec’s Environment Quality Act and the Jambes Bay Northern Quebec Agreement, the company said.
