No new COVID-19 cases, single recovery reported in Iqaluit Thursday

Nunavut’s active case count drops to 21

No new cases of COVID-19 and one recovery are being reported in Iqaluit on Thursday.

There are now 21 active cases of COVID-19 in the territory, all in Iqaluit, said Premier Joe Savikataaq on Twitter.

The announcement comes a day after the government announced a spike in cases in Iqaluit, with seven new infections reported Wednesday. For several days prior, Iqaluit was seeing between two and zero new cases per day.

Nunavut has reported 647 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the global pandemic more than a year ago. Four deaths have been reported in Nunavut, according to the federal government’s coronavirus website.

Across Canada, there have been 1,368,106 cases in the same time period. COVID-19 has taken 25,361 lives across the country.

As of Thursday 17,104 people in Nunavut have received their first dose of the Moderna vaccine and 14,611 are fully vaccinated.

      You have to disaggregate the numbers. Our population is so incredibly young that a huge proportion of the population hasn’t qualified for vaccinations. We have vaccinated a very high proportion of 18 plus, but that is lost in the overall numbers.

      With the 12 plus starting to be vaccinated from next week the numbers will soon change.

        You also need to factor in a major elephant that no one wants to talk about. The truth is many people of indigenous origin, of which mke of the majority of Nunavut population, will not get the vaccine. You can expect the same for their children.
