Salluit residents say 15-year-old died from exposure
A teenage girl died in Salluit on Sunday, Jan. 27.
The Kativik Regional Police Force confirmed she was found outside at around 4:30 p.m.
Police wouldn’t provide other details. But community members say the girl, aged 15, was found beneath a house and appears to have died from exposure.
According to Environment Canada, it was -28 C that day in Salluit.
Following the publication of this story on Wednesday afternoon, Quebec’s Bureau des enquêtes indepéndantes (BEI) issued a release saying the agency had taken charge of the investigation.
According to the BEI, a concerned family member of the victim called the KRPF on Jan. 27 at around 3:30 a.m. to ask police to look for the missing girl.
Police officers went out looking for the victim but returned an hour later unsuccessful.
The girl was found dead later that day, underneath a house.
The BEI’s role is to independently investigate incidents in which civilians are seriously injured or killed during police interventions.
The agency said six investigators would arrive in Salluit today.
