Nunavut launches public consultations on Coral Harbour’s school renovations
Meetings begin Jan. 21 in school’s gymnasium
The Government of Nunavut will launch public consultations on Tuesday, Jan. 21, on major renovations to Sakku School in Coral Harbour.
Upgrades to the existing kindergarten to Grade 12 school would involve the addition of a large gym, which would offer more services to community members, including young children, their parents and children with special needs.
New classrooms will also be built to support student growth and more cultural programming.
In Oct. 2018, Patterk Netser, Coral Harbour’s MLA, told the legislature that his constituents in the community of about 800 wanted to see a new school built.
Netser also tabled a petition, along with a series of photos of the school and letters from parents that underlined concerns for the school’s 300 students.
Also in Oct. 2018, Coral Harbour’s district education authority closed the school for two days to protest the school’s bad conditions.
“Feedback from community members and organizations will help the GN build a healthy and vibrant school that meets the needs of Coral Harbour and its residents for years to come,” states a Department of Education news release.
The public consultations will start on Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Sakku School’s gymnasium.
People wanting to find out more about the proposed changes and to provide feedback can also contact Sakku School’s principal, Travis Klak, at TKlak@gov.nu.ca or at 867-925-9923.
Correction
An earlier version of this story stated that Netser tabled photos showing mould in the school. The Department of Education disputes that these photos showed mould and says that subsequent tests for mould came back negative.
