Two Nunavut women are being honoured for their outstanding contributions to their communities and to the territory.

Elisapie Sheutiapik, Nunavut’s minister responsible for the status of women, announced the winner of Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council’s Wise Woman and Outstanding Young Woman Awards for this year.

The 2019 Wise Woman Award goes to Rosemary Sandy of Rankin Inlet, who was recognized for keeping traditional knowledge of sewing and cooking alive. Sandy has worked as a cooking instructor for Nunavut Arctic College in her hometown and was recently awarded a Canada 150 medal for her volunteerism.

“Rosemary is known by others as someone who can be called upon in times of need, making her an excellent role model for others,” Sheutiapik told the legislative assembly March 12.

Qulliit’s Outstanding Young Woman Award goes to Tasha Tologanak of Cambridge Bay.

Tologanak is being honoured for her volunteerism in her home community, where she has supported a number of charitable drives to collect food, winter clothing and other emergency provisions for community members in need.

The 23-year-old woman is currently studying culinary arts at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton and plans to open her own catering business in Cambridge Bay once she graduates.

“These awards are intended to honor women across Nunavut. Women who are role models within our communities, advocating for and on behalf of others, teaching traditional skills, and volunteering to support those in need,” Sheutiapik said.

“Please join me today in honouring these two women who are role models in their communities and who provide outstanding volunteer, advocacy work, and support to others.”
