A woman originally from Pond Inlet was the victim of a Christmas Day homicide in Ottawa’s Hintonburg neighbourhood.

Jolene Arreak, 46, was killed at around 6:10 p.m. on Dec. 25 at a home on Spadina Avenue, the Ottawa Police Service said in a news release Thursday. Police described her as an Ottawa resident.

But on Friday, the Ottawa Police Service confirmed to Nunatsiaq News that Arreak was from Pond Inlet.

Police arrested Manasi Foo, a 35-year-old man also from Ottawa. He was charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court Dec. 26, where he was ordered to remain in custody.

Foo was also charged with the attempted murder of a surviving victim, who was treated in hospital and then released. Police did not release any further information about the second victim, including the person’s gender, age or relationship to either the homicide victim or the accused.

Police did not provide any information about whether the victims and the accused knew each other.

Spadina Avenue is a residential area in Ottawa’s Hintonburg area on the north side of Highway 417, about one kilometre northeast of the Ottawa Civic Hospital.

Arreak is Ottawa’s 25th homicide victim of 2024.
