Hundreds of Nunavummiut have stepped forward to put their names on the ballots for upcoming municipal elections in 25 communities across the territory.

Municipal elections will be held Oct. 23 in all communities. In total, 498 elected positions are up for grabs.

Residents will be able to elect mayors, councillors, and alcohol education committee and district education authority members in their communities.

Nunatsiaq News has compiled a list of all the candidates as of Monday morning. All names are listed in the same order in which they appear on the Elections Nunavut site.

Every municipality will elect eight local councillors except Grise Fiord, which has five council members.

For councils, DEAs and alcohol education committees that have an incomplete slate, the nominees are all acclaimed. They will be able to put out a call for appointments to fill the empty seats.

Nunatsiaq News will provide in-depth coverage of the races in all communities as election day approaches.

Department of Finance needs to start support Alcohol Education Committees.

These local committees are in place because of the Nunavut Liquor Act yet the Minister of Finance does not fund them.

They generate millions of dollars worth of revenue for the Government of Nunavut.

Government of Nunavut needs to start supporting them.

67% of those running for mayor and 64% of those running for council in Iqaluit are non-Inuit.

Representation for the capital, unfortunately the original people may not be represented accordingly and the way council will work is similar to where these people came from, which in a lot of ways does not work great up here because a large part of the population is not represented.

The system in place makes it very difficult to break through as in its current state it’s designed and works for the southern way. This doesn’t mean the people running are bad people but their perspective and experience are usually not that of Iqaluit or Nunavut.

          > The system in place… …designed and works for the southern way.

Can you explain how the “southern way” would be any different than an “Inuit Government?” What does a modern government look like to a once nomadic people?

Maybe we can look at the circumpolar regions and see what the differences are, starting from Alaska, what we have noticed is Alaskans have lost a lot of their language especially in their youth. Cultural identity, traditions and most of the jobs seem to go to non indigenous people in Alaska., NWT, Nunavut, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut seem to be in a similar situation where most of the jobs go to non-Inuit and the language is eroding in the younger generations.
Greenland for whatever reason is heading in the right direction with most of their employment are local and their language is thriving even with the youth. They are doing something right over there and I think more research is needed to see how they are accomplishing this. One trip to Greenland you can see the differences.

That is, sadly, reflective of the Iqalummiut demographic. Hopefully the qalluna running will remember they are guests of the Inuit and Nunavut, and use any duties as an opportunity to thank them through service.

Yes it doesn’t work like that but it really should be, it’s disrespectful to ignore and leave out the people from here.
This is what is called colonization and it’s still very much alive today.

Does this conclude conflict of interest policy to run for Municipal Councillors?

    – Couples in House-Hold?
    – Son/ Daughter/ Father?

Is this exempted with Nunavut Elections ACT? or is this ONLY in Nunavut?

What about conflict of interest with big business and council?

Though it is tuff to swallow as i have no faith that the big business people are not in it for themselves they are also probably the ones that could get stuff done and are use to working hard for what they want.

All we can do as community members is hope that what they are working for will also benefit the community a well as get the person more money through the business.
And probably this is better then the person that is excited to be getting the $150/meeting a couple times a month. because if $300 a month gets you excited with the cost of life these days how much more do you have going one.

But councillors/mayor should not at all do this to benefit their business; that IS a conflict of interest…

          • Posted by Putting this out there on

You are correct they shouldnt do it and it is a very large conflict of Interest…. but we have to many examples of that still happening…
but even more examples of councilors that do not do ANYTHING (which holds back communities)

            …… which is worse?

It’s a popularity contest, not based on work experience, education, accomplishments, knowledge, but on a popularity contest, pretty face and thousands of facebook followers.
Our politicians are puppets to bureaucracy, especially at the GN level, we need better leaders and not a beauty contest.
