Pangnirtung road for turbot fishing

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Four times during the fall in Pangnirtung, ships come into the community to unload turbot that’s then processed in the local fish plant. This creates employment before the hunters can go out on the ice and fish for turbot themselves.

“I am proud to hear that people in the fisheries plant will be quite successful again this year, but because freeze-up has been quite late in the winter now, they are going to look for other ways to harvest the turbot,” Peter Kilabuk, the minister of community government, and the MLA for Pangnirtung, said in the assembly last week.

“Towards the end of this month, they will be building a road along the river there that the skidoos can use as a trail to the turbot fishing site. They can then get an early start before freeze-up.”
