Patterson urges Arviat residents not to visit this weekend

Hard-hit community adds two more cases

By Nunatsiaq News

Arviat has two new cases of COVID-19, the Government of Nunavut announced Friday.

That brings the total number of active cases within the hard-hit community to 29. All of Nunavut’s COVID-19 cases are located in Arviat.

The announcement prompted Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut’s chief public health officer, to urge all Nunavummiut to continue supporting the community.

And he urged that Arviat residents not let their guards down.

“As we head into the weekend, it is imperative that Arviammiut refrain from visiting, maintain strong physical distancing and wear masks when outside their households.”

All residents with active cases of COVID-19 are doing well and isolating at home, the government’s news release states. Contact tracing is ongoing.

As of Friday, testing in Arviat had yielded 2,153 negative tests.

Travel in and out of Arviat remains restricted, unless for emergency or essential purposes.

Arviammiut who want to receive the COVID-19 vaccine can call their health centre for an appointment.

To date, 6,915 Nunavummiut have received at least one dose of the Moderna vaccine. Vaccine clinics in the territory are ongoing.

Anyone who believes they have been exposed to COVID-19 is asked to call the COVID hotline at 1-888-975-8601 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST, or notify their community health centre right away, and immediately isolate at home for 14 days.

Please do not go to the health centre in person.

I disagree, At this point it’s not about strength or being strong. It’s obedience. A very simple request from Dr. Patterson. 1. Stay home don’t visit. 2. If you “have to go out” Social distancing 3. Wash your hands frequently 4. Wear a mask.

Plain and simple- listen to Dr. Patterson’s guidelines.

Tavvatuaq-that’s it. There is no big halabaloo of or about strength or pride involved. Arviat obey.

Dr Patterson has requested too often.

The Hamlet Council now must ORDER people to not visit and to remain indoors etc.

By-Law needs to enforce it and fine those without reason.

The people of Arviat are now doing it to themselves.

This was my thought too… the Doctor is saying what he has to say, but one wonders if there really is any use at this point? If the message hasn’t gotten through now it probably never will.

I’ll add, I am sure there are many Arviammiut who are doing all they can and following the protocols so this isn’t a blanket condemnation by any means.
