Photo: Feds look at SARA listing for polar bears

The federal government has moved closer to adding the polar bear to its list of species of special concern. The proposal to list polar bears was announced on July 2, and interested parties now have 30 days to comment. The move to list polar bears comes three years after the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada assessed the polar bear as a species of special concern. Under the Species at Risk Act, the listing of a species like polar bears as special concern requires the preparation of a management plan to prevent the species from becoming endangered or threatened.
