Seven new COVID-19 cases announced in Arviat

Community now has 18 active cases

By Nunatsiaq News

Arviat has seven new cases of COVID-19, the Government of Nunavut announced Monday.

That brings the territory’s total case count to 18, all in Arviat.

“As we see an increase in COVID-19 cases in Arviat, it is critical that everyone continues to do their part to stop the spread of the virus,” Nunavut’s chief public health officer, Dr. Michael Patterson, said in a news release.

“Please stay home unless absolutely necessary, wear a mask when outside your household, limit gatherings to outdoors only and wash your hands frequently. I know you are all tired and fatigue is setting in, but please stay the course and stay strong.”

The government says that all residents with active cases of COVID-19 are doing well and isolating at home. Contact tracing is ongoing. As of Feb. 15, testing in Arviat has yielded 2,056 negative results.

COVID-19 vaccines are currently available in Arviat — residents can call the health centre to set an appointment.

To date, 6,500 Nunavummiut have received at least one dose of the Moderna vaccine. Vaccine clinics in the territory are ongoing.

Any Nunavut resident who has reason to believe they have been exposed to COVID-19 is advised to call the COVID-hotline at 1-888-975-8601 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST, or notify their community health centre right away, and immediately isolate at home for 14 days. Please do not go to the health centre in person.

Is there a way to limit or stop people traveling out of Arviat to visit people? I find this is very concerning and I’m no doctor or expert but also a huge risk factor for spreading the Covid virus to other communities.

I can see it being allowed for essential workers but for the ones that are traveling just to visit right now that is very irresponsible of the individuals. It should not be allowed at this time until we are certain Arviat is covid free. Stay home and protect yourselves and everyone too.
Especially with the variant covid that is spreading like crazy around the world and in Canada.

Is the GN testing the positive cases for the variants I wonder? We are hearing nothing much from the GN lately. We have a right to know what is going on. Every province has variants that are spreading quickly…

I agree with you, haven’t read or heard a word from the Premier. From time to time I read what the Chief Medical Officer is saying. same words he use each time someone is infected with COVID-19 -wash, stay home, wear a mask etc. Both the premier and chief medical officer need to take action to stop this virus from spreading.

“Stay Home, No Visitors, Wash Your Hands, Distance”…it does not work. First Nation in the provinces; cots brought into the communities, make ready at the school gyms, halls waiting for sick ppl. Arviat; we are the oddity, stupid, dissenters are at just laughing away. there was suggestion for the Rangers to go into action, Rangers? We need the real stuff, who can arrest, force ppl to go home. we need RCR or PPCLI now…When do we smarten up? when fatalities start coming our way? this is not sarcasm, its a real thing as I see my community. talker after talker on local radio, “listen to authorities…what authorities? Goodness look at Eastern Canada, huge provinces, healing.

That’s why Covid continues to spread in Arviat with this type of thinking. Stay home, no hugging! Wear a mask, wash your hands.
