Subdivision by any other name still the same
A name has been chosen for the road that will eventually run through the Lake subdivision, which the city is in the process of developing.
Although a contest was held inviting Grade 6 students from Aqsarniik Ilinniarvik Middle School to name the road, in the end the final decision came from a group of elders.
The elders suggested calling it Imiqtarviminiq, which means old water hill, because this is how it was known traditionally.
In the process of choosing a name, a committee was formed to lead decisions for future street naming. The committee consists of Peter Irniq, Nunavut’s commissioner, Eva Aariak, the language commissioner, Ed Picco, the minister of health, and deputy mayor Elisapee Sheutiapik.
