Tony Noakes Jr. says many GN buildings unsafe to work or live in

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

I would like to say a final farewell to the residents of Nunavut as their fire marshal.

The abruptness of my termination has left many issues still to be resolved and only allows the serious fire and life safety issues to remain unchecked.

The Baffin Correctional Centre is one of thousands of GN facilities currently in operation. While it had enormous issues, let me assure you that many public facilities suffer from ongoing contraventions of the Fire Prevention Act.

Don’t take my word for this. Ask to see the books. Be informed. You and your family members may be living and working in facilities that are unsafe.

It’s your right as citizens to ask for accountability when it comes to your safety.

It is a sad day when a government terminates a law enforcement official to hide its problems from the public.

It was once said that a government that does not abide by its own laws, creates contempt for those laws in the eyes of the people. When citizens have contempt for the law, than only tyranny can exist.

In ending, I wanted to say that the Nunavut Fire Service members are a great group of people that I was proud to be a part of. I wish them the best in the future of their service.
