Whale nailed by cruise ship bow
A cruise ship pulled into port last Saturday in Seward, Alaska with a dead whale pinned to its bow, reports the Anchorage Daily News.
Investigators said it did not appear the ship’s operators did anything wrong.
The crew of the 2,000-passenger ship Summit said they were surprised to discover they had snagged a whale. They felt no bump during their voyage, a company spokesman said.
The whale was spotted by longshoremen after the vessel was tied up at a dock.
The whale was tentatively identified as a humpback.
The Summit is owned by Celebrity Cruises, which advertises that passengers on its Alaska voyages will encounter “untamed wildlife” and “unspoiled ports of call.”
Meanwhile, Alaska is considering imposing new taxes and new regulations on the cruise industry.
