Iqaluit fire chief Luc Grandmaison at a special meeting of Iqaluit City Council Aug. 1, explaining what it will take to extinguish the city’s dump fire. The city learned that the territorial and federal governments will not give them any money to help pay for a $2.6 million plan to douse the fire. Grandmaison said the cost of putting it out is actually projected at $3.3 million, and could rise. “We’ll have to do a lot of soul-searching to look at where we can find many more dollars,” said John Hussey, chief administrative officer for the city. Council resolved to do so within a week’s time and will send the matter to its finance committee. (PHOTO BY PETER VARGA)
