Gov. Gen. Mary May Simon and her husband, Whit Fraser, started off their Thanksgiving weekend with a visit to an Ottawa homeless shelter and food centre.
Every day, hundreds of homeless people line up to receive free food and groceries from the Ottawa Mission. May Simon and Fraser spent part of Friday morning greeting the mission’s clients and touring the facilities.
“The Ottawa Mission, and similar community organizations across the country, are vital in supporting our most vulnerable,” May Simon said in a statement. “Thank you to all those who make this happen on a daily basis, and help shape a positive future for their communities.”
Indigenous people represent up to 34 per cent of homeless shelter populations, according to a 2018 report from the mission.
“At the Ottawa Mission, we offer culturally safe and appropriate programs to meet the needs of our Indigenous clients,” the organization tweeted last week on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The organization also provides Inuit-specific mental health services in co-operation with Tungasuvvingat Inuit.

I think that is wonderful, Queen representative to Canada supporting the front line and seeing the less fortunate folks. Whit being the model husband as always!
