Clyde River's Jerry Natanine at a climate change rally in Ottawa in 2015: The Supreme Court of Canada decided March 10 that it would hear an appeal from Natanine, the Hamlet of Clyde River and the Nammautaq Hunters and Trappers Organization who want to stop seismic testing off the coast of Baffin Island. The case has been winding its way through lower courts since June 2014 when the National Energy Board approved an application from a group of companies known as Multi-Klient Invest, or “MKI” to conduct a five-year seismic testing program in Baffin Bay and Davis Strait, an industrial activity Inuit claim will harm marine animals. Seismic opponents also argue that community consultation was not properly done. Natanine, reached at home in Clyde River, said he was overjoyed with the Supreme Court's decision.
