A Coral Harbour man has been charged with arson following a fire that badly damaged a fourplex in the community on Jan. 17, leaving two units unusable, says Nunavut RCMP.

The 23-year-old faces two counts of arson, and two counts relating to damage of property, RCMP said in a news release on Monday.

He is also charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm and unsafe storage of a firearm.

The accused was one of the residents of the fourplex, said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Pauline Melanson.

Melanson said the firearms charges are unrelated to the arson charges. She said RCMP found the firearms in the man’s residence.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 26.

If there were people in the building at the time of the attempted arson, the charges should be upped to attempted murder.

The irony is that he is probably the type to benefit from public housing and is in dire need of housing. NHC probably sees this and shakes their heads.
