Nunavut residents voted May 9 on whether they want their hamlet or city to be able to sell the municipal lands that they own, rather than be restricted to leasing them. All of the territory’s communities said No, including Grise Fiord, Nunavut’s smallest community, where a Yes vote was reported in error. In fact, a total of 33 people in Grise Fiord voted: 29 voted No and four voted Yes. Voters in all 25 communities voted by large pluralities against any change. The final result in Iqaluit showed voters prefer to keep the status quo, with 362 voting Yes and 832 voting No. The turnout in Iqaluit was 29.14 per cent. Read more later at Nunatsiaqonline.ca.
