Ceremony and curling kick off Arctic Winter Games

This year’s Games are held in Mat-Su Valley, Alaska

Hundreds of athletes, support staff, volunteers and fans descended upon the Menard Center in Wasilla, Alaska on Sunday to take part in the opening ceremony for this year’s Arctic Winter Games.

Nearly 400 athletes from Team Nunavut and Team Nunavik are in Alaska’s Mat-Su Valley this week to compete in sports, including hockey, badminton, curling and skiing.

Iris Sowdluapik of Pangnirtung led Team Nunavut into the arena after the ceremonial lighting of the torch and speeches from dignitaries, including Gov. Gen. Mary Simon.

Curling was underway after the ceremony.

The Arctic Winter Games run March 10 to March 16.
