Iqaluit’s annual spring cultural festival begins this week, kicking off with a civic holiday Friday to allow residents to join in activities.
Toonik Tyme, which began in 1965, runs this year from April 5 to 14 and celebrates the arrival of spring with traditional Inuit activities and events.
Local non-profit organization 123Go!, organizes the yearly family-friendly event and has posted this year’s calendar of events to its Facebook page.
Some of the events throughout the festival include snowmobile and dogsled races, a fishing derby, a tea and bannock competition, Elders bingo and kids games.
The final day, April 14, will see the Kimmirut Race with Qamutiq, which begins at 10 a.m. and will award a total of $20,000 among the top five race finishers.
The City of Iqaluit is advising Iqalummiut that there will be a halt on city services, including regular trucked services for water delivery, waste water removal and garbage pickup on Friday.
Additionally, all city facilities, including recreation buildings and the landfill, will be closed Friday for the civic holiday.

Boy, this is a long week. I feel for you guys in Iqaluit. Must be exhausting working 3 days a week in your Hamlet. LOL.
Childish, as always…
Can only say that anonymously and on a keyboard? THAT is childish. Run away behind a false name.
Same old impotent counter attack… You are a broken record, Paul. Childish, and (I should have said) BORING
I’ll enjoy the extra half-day off, thanks. Some of us have families who like us and relish the opportunity to have an extra half day together. One of the benefits that come from not being smug and always needing to take people to task and troll and have the last word.
Holeh, bitter Betty for good news 😂 nice to know you find any reason to be salty while we holiday!
When will Iqaluit declare ‘John WP Murphy Day’ a holiday?
.
Where we all bask in the knowledge knowing John WP Murphy is upset some people have the day off?
.
Maybe we can relabel ‘blizzard days’ after him, to double up with all the “in the Kivalliq this is just another day ending in Y” types who get upset at blizzard announcements far from where they live?
.
At the very least, the NN Comments moderator deserves a ‘John WP Murphy’ day off for their hard work!
Hiding anonymously I see. It’s called “No Balls”. At least you know when it’s me. Have fun on your day off. Heard there may be a blizzard in Iqaluit next week. Close the hamlet down whiners. LOL
Because you say so? You are not the authority on everything and everyone. You say things the loudest and you get the last word, but believe me, the people closest to you are rolling their eyes and shaking their heads and whispering their actual optinions when you leave the room. Same goes for your former employees.
Geriatric adolescent.
Grow up and get a life. This behaviour borders on trashy.
As they do every year
Is this a current picture, beautiful sled dogs healthy looking,
What is toonik tymw
