Photo: Parks Canada shows off Erebus artifacts in Kitikmeot

Filippa Ronca of Parks Canada shows off a belayer from the HMS Erebus to residents of Cambridge Bay gathered at the Luke Novoligak community hall. This past summer, Parks Canada divers, with assistance from the Royal Canadian Navy and the Arctic Research Foundation, used laser technology to record detailed three-dimensional interior and exterior views of the Sir John Franklin wreck and also brought back more artifacts including dishes and a belt buckle. The Erebus and HMS Terror both sank in Victoria Strait, north of Queen Maud Gulf, during Franklin’s unsuccessful voyage through the Northwest Passage in 1845. HMS Terror has yet to be found.
