RCMP officers were still waiting for more information Tuesday afternoon about a shelter-in-place advisory issued earlier in the day in Clyde River which remained in effect for about 90 minutes.

The RCMP’s Nunavut division posted the advisory to its Facebook page at around 7 a.m.

“The situation is resolved,” spokesperson Cpl. George Henrie said in an email response to Nunatsiaq News shortly after 8:30 a.m. “The RCMP have the person in custody.”

Nunatsiaq News asked whether there were any injuries, if charges were expected to be laid, and what the nature of the incident was.

When reached by phone at 3:30 p.m., Henrie said he did not yet have that information.

When the advisory was posted, people in Clyde River were told to stay inside their homes while the RCMP dealt with an “ongoing situation” involving a firearm.

It’s unclear where the incident occurred in the hamlet, which has about 1,200 residents.

Businesses and organizations including the health centre, school, and Northern store posted to Clyde River’s community Facebook group that they would remain closed during the morning.

After the advisory was lifted, some posted that they were reopening.
