Six Nunavummiut were awarded King Charles III medals Thursday in a ceremony at the legislative assembly in Iqaluit.

Receiving the medal at the ceremony were Kevin Kullualik, patrol sergeant with Iqaluit’s Canadian Ranger Patrol Group; Elisapee Davidee Aningmiuq, health advocate; Jimmy Akavak, chair of the Amaruq Hunters and Trappers Association; Paul Quassa, former Nunavut premier; Ceporah Mearns, director of the Nunavut Network Environment for Indigenous Health Research; and John Quirke, first clerk of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut.

The medal is awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to Canada, and is administered through the Chancellery of Honours at Rideau Hall, the official residence of the governor general.

Congratulations to all the recipients. Well deserved.

However, It appears someone responsible for protocol missed a beat.

The Award Medal was from His Majesty the King, NOT from the Premier, NOT from a mayor, NOT from any MLA. BUT, from the King.
Clear he couldn’t be at any of the presentations.

HOWEVER, his representative for Nunavut (the Commissioner} should be presenting every medal in the recipient’s community. Not just in Iqaluit. This is one time that the Commissioner should be travelling.
