Tuberculosis screening clinics in Arviat are coming to an end, but “focused” screenings at the community’s health centre will continue.
The Department of Health announced the change June 13 in a public service announcement.
Residents are encouraged to visit the local health centre for testing and treatment.
The department declared an outbreak in the hamlet in February and began “targeted screening” for the disease. By April, the health department switched gears and began a community-wide screening clinic.
Anyone who has not been screened or who has been in contact with someone with active tuberculosis can visit the health centre or book a free and confidential appointment by calling 867-857-3100.
“Tuberculosis testing is quick and simple, and it’s a great way to take care of yourself and those around you. Getting tested doesn’t mean you have TB, it just helps catch it early, which is the best way to stop it from spreading,” the announcement said.
Symptoms of active tuberculosis include:
- A cough that lasts more than three weeks;
- Feeling very tired;
- Loss of appetite;
- Unexplained weight loss;
- Fever or night sweats.
People experiencing any of the symptoms of active tuberculosis are encouraged to visit their local health centre as soon as possible.
