The City of Iqaluit has cancelled all pool programming at the Iqaluit Aquatic Centre on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The cancellations are to “accommodate an internal staff swimming instructor course,” the city announced Tuesday in a news release.

The training should more than double the number of certified swim instructors available to teach new swimmers, said Teryn Bubnick, the city’s aquatic program supervisor.

All the participants are currently lifeguards, and they will receive instruction from the pool’s aquatic program manager Benjamin LePage.

The pool does not have plans in place to expand swimming lessons and aquatic programming, but Bubnick said she anticipates more certified instructors will allow for expansion in the future.

“Our ability to offer swimming lessons right now is in the hands of what [eight instructors] can do for availability,” she said. “With 13 more people, we will have that many more available to teach.”

Regular programming at the pool is expected to resume Sunday.
