Education Minister David Akeeagok returned to the legislative assembly Tuesday with a message of hope, as he’s been away from work to support his wife Carol Akeeagok through her cancer treatment.

“We would like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to many people who have prayed for us, especially [for] my wife,” David Akeeagok he said in Inuktitut through an interpreter.

The MLA for Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu used his member’s statement to update his colleagues that he and his wife have been travelling south since December, after she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

In that time, Akeeagok said he’s been following up on constituency concerns.

Other cabinet ministers have taken on Akeeagok’s portfolios in his absence, including Nunavut Premier John Main stepping in as acting education minister.

“I would like to thank all the cabinet members and our officials… who have been very supportive,” Akeeagok said. “I watch the session proceedings every day, and the premier usually responds … exactly the same as the way I would.”

The minister said the journey ahead is “unknown.”

“I would like to say my wife is very strong. She’s stronger than I am,” David Akeeagok said. “Sometimes she almost gives up, but she always brings herself back up.”

He added: “Please continue to pray for us, especially the patients. There are many patients that are going through chemotherapy treatment and they’re going through a difficult time with their treatment.”

Other MLAs briefly made statements welcoming their colleague back.

“We’re very pleased that you’re back, and we think of you, and we have missed you as well,” said Speaker David Joanasie.
