The bodies of two Kangirsuk residents who went missing after falling into a river earlier this month have been located and identified.
“Our community has suffered an incredible loss, and everyone mourns the passing of two precious friends and family members,” said Deputy Mayor Elijah Grey, in a Kativik Regional Government news release
Emma Munick and Collin Hauki were attempting to cross the Marqigiaq River on the morning of June 6 to participate in a fishing derby, the release said.
However, the ice collapsed.
Kangirsuk’s emergency response team, KRG’s civil security department, the Nunavik Police Service and volunteers from other communities worked together in the search.
Searchers found and identified Munick and Hauki’s bodies Tuesday afternoon, KRG said.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Emma and Collin, who have been taken from their family and community too soon,” KRG chairperson Maggie Emudluk said.
“On behalf of the KRG, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the search and rescue-recovery teams in Kangirsuk who worked tirelessly and bravely to achieve a successful outcome in the recovery of the two bodies.”
A GoFundMe page identifies Munick and Hauki as the parents of three young children.
As of Friday afternoon, $15,285 has been raised to support the kids.
