Residents of the apartment building were alerted by a fire alarm, smoke, firefighters and police, an RCMP news release said.
No one was injured in the fire, which was contained within an apartment and extinguished.
Iqaluit RCMP were dispatched to assist with the fire shortly after 1 a.m. that morning.

Another man, Saimo Kopalie, 25, of Iqaluit, was charged with arson in connection with another fire, which broke out in the early morning hours of Jan. 5 at a one-bedroom rowhouse unit in the 600 block of the Creekside Village complex.
The two fires are unconnected.
