Northmart in Iqaluit will host a watch party at the Astro Hill Theatre on July 4, as Canada takes on Morocco in a FIFA World Cup round of 16 knockout match in Houston, Texas.
Northmart’s assistant store manager Jibran Khan, who grew up playing soccer near Toronto, came up with the idea.
“We wanted to see if we could book the big theatre and just invite all the soccer teams from town, the youth and just open it up for the community,” Khan said in an interview. “Have a good little celebration, have a few laughs and just share our Canadian pride.”
The watch party will have reserved seating for members of the Iqaluit Kids Club, Team Inuit Football Club, Inuksuk Football Club and other local youth soccer teams, Khan wrote in an email.
“Our local youth is so blessed with talent, they can absolutely do anything,” Khan said in the interview. “You may have the next Jonathan David or the next Shaffelburg sitting in the Astro theatre watching the game.”
Northmart will hold a 50/50 draw at the event. The proceeds will go to the Healthy Horizons Foundation, a non-profit that serves youth in northern Indigenous communities created by Northmart’s parent company, the North West Company.
Khan said the theatre concession will be open at noon, an hour before gametime, and that Northmart will be providing “some fun little goodies, too.”
