Two Iqaluit group homes will remain open after Nunavut’s Department of Family Services reached an agreement with Angirraq Corp. to keep services running for seven youth under its care.

The extension means youth will receive uninterrupted group home and support services until the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year, while the department and company conduct a joint review of program delivery and financial arrangements.

“The department’s priority remains the safety, stability and well-being of the youth in its care,” said Uchenna Azbuike, spokesperson for the department, in a news release.

Angirraq, which has been in operation since 2025, received a 30-day contract termination notice from the department on June 17, CBC News reported this week, putting the future of the organization’s two Iqaluit facilities in question.

The department did not provide Nunatsiaq News with a reason for its initial contract termination with Angirraq.

I will help the department out and provide the reason: It was tired of bad press coverage exposing its incompetence and bad management so it decided to reverse course.
