Kinngait man faces 1st-degree murder charge

Police charged 42-year-old Ezeevadluk Suvega of Kinngait with first-degree murder after Nunavut RCMP officers responded Friday to a report of a shooting and found a man had barricaded himself inside a house.
Officers in Kinngait responded to reports of a shooting at a house in the hamlet’s 5400 block around 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 7, wrote Corp. Ashley Daley in a news release issued Monday.
Police issued a shelter-in-place alert for Kinngait during the operation. An RCMP containment team and an emergency response team from Ottawa arrived to assist local officers.
The RCMP’s major crime unit arrested and charged Suvega on Aug. 8, Daley said.
The victim is a 36-year-old woman who police said the accused knew.
Daley said police will not release the victim’s name to respect her family’s privacy.
Because the case is now before the court, police will not release any further details, Daley said.
Suvega was in front of a judge on Sunday and was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is set for Sept. 15 in Iqaluit.
