Maggie Annahatak elected Kangirsuk mayor by 1 vote
Byelection took place Wednesday to replace former mayor Etua Kaukai, who died in July.

Maggie Annahatak has been elected mayor of Kangirsuk after edging out Noah Eetook by a single vote in Wednesday’s byelection.
Annahatak, who works as a housing manager with the Nunavik Housing Bureau, received 59 votes, while Eetook received 58. Lucy Tukkiapik Carrier received four votes, and two ballots were spoiled, according to results shared on the municipal services’ Facebook page Wednesday night.
Annahatak could not be reached for comment about her win on Thursday.
A total of 123 of Kangirsuk’s 337 eligible voters cast ballots, representing a turnout of about 36.5 per cent.
The byelection was held to fill the mayoral seat left vacant after Etua Kaukai died in July.
Kaukai was elected mayor on Nov. 6, 2024, for a three-year term. He also served on the board of Nunavik Investment Corp., a non-profit organization that provides funding and loans to entrepreneurs.
