Pangnirtung is in shock after a shooting Tuesday afternoon injured a man, says deputy Mayor Markus Wilcke.
Wilcke said he heard shots Tuesday at around 4 p.m. and that the RCMP has since made an arrest.
“A lot of people were impacted, many of them children,” the deputy mayor said in an interview. “Pretty well everybody was impacted, directly or indirectly.”
He said the shots came from near the harbour. The suspect then entered residential streets and the area near the hamlet office.
“The RCMP did a good job and everyone is safe now,” Wilcke said.
Nunatsiaq News asked the RCMP about the incident but was told information about it would be available Thursday.
Wilcke says the hamlet will update the community through public statements and that counselling services will be available.
He also said the community can expect a public meeting within the next few days to discuss what actions are needed to respond and prevent similar incidents in the future.
