A videographer was assaulted Monday in Gjoa Haven while filming for an energy-saving initiative, says Mayor Raymond Quqshuun Sr.

“The hamlet is taking the incident seriously while respecting the privacy of those involved,” Quqshuun said in an email to Nunatsiaq News on Thursday.

It’s unclear what exactly happened but the victim was uninjured, Quqshuun said. The incident was reported to the hamlet but not the RCMP.

The mayor did not say if the victim was visiting the community and declined to provide any further details.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the account for the hamlet’s mayor described the victim as a videographer involved in Gjoa Haven’s Winter Clean Energy Challenge, an initiative that encourages households to reduce energy use in the winter.

“Incidents like these are unusual,” Quqshuun said in his email, adding that the community is known to be “particularly warm and welcoming” to guests.

Run by the Kikitak Housing Association, Qulliq Energy Corp., the hamlet maintenance team and Yukon University’s Northern Energy Innovation program, the challenge provides participants with weather-stripping material, window film and energy-friendly shower heads.

The household with the largest energy reduction wins an electric side-by-side utility terrain vehicle, Quqshuun said.

Wow, really ought to report it to the RCMP or it’ll keep happening.

” It’s unclear what exactly happened but the victim was unhurt ”

How do we know the victim is a victim if its unclear what actually happened? Here’s a better title. “A videographer was allegedly assaulted while…….”

    Interesting, but zero information.

The videographer was assaulted, but not hurt, didn’t report to the RCMP, but did to the hamlet.

Hamlet won’t provide any more info, and I guess the videographer won’t?

Then it ends on a prize.

    Weird.

“Something possibly bad happened – no further details. Also, we have a prize contest.”
