Police have charged a Chesterfield Inlet youth with first-degree murder following the death of a man in the hamlet early Friday morning.

Nunavut RCMP issued a news release about the incident Tuesday.

Officers arrived on scene at 1 a.m. following a report of gunfire and located a man “with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound,” the release said.

The victim was transported to the local health centre, where he was pronounced dead.

Police arrested a youth and the Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit laid charges that same day.

The youth, whose identity is protected by law, is in custody and scheduled to appear in court in Iqaluit on Nov. 16.

It’s unclear what, if any, relation there is between the accused and victim.

RCMP are not providing any further details, the release said.
