RCMP have charged a man with second-degree murder in connection with an altercation that happened Oct. 6 in Iqaluit.
Qaqasie Aningmiuq, 21, was arrested on Oct. 16, Nunavut RCMP said Monday in a news release issued by Sgt. George Henrie.
Police previously identified the man who died as 38-year-old Robert Kipanik.
He was among two people transported to Qikiqtani General Hospital with life-threatening injuries on Oct. 6, after police responded to calls about an altercation at around 9:55 p.m. in the 300 block of the city.
The other person survived after being medevaced to Ottawa. Police have not identified them.
The RCMP’s Major Crime Unit is handling the investigation.
Aningmiuq remains in custody until his next court appearance, which is scheduled for Nov. 17.

With all these murders, so many for our little population, I wonder if our Nunavut Government will address the dire situation we are in?
Why is our government, MLAs silent? Does this not matter?
It is very perplexing that our government is giving this a silent treatment when our territory is in crisis, it makes me think maybe because it is not a certain race that it is happening to that this does not seem to be a issue for our government, it’s crazy how things change and yet some things stay the same in 2026 soon to be 2027. What will it take for action to be done?
